AZTECS BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT KICK STARTS THE NEW SEASON !
The 2009-10 season got underway with a bang at the Aztecs Basketball Tournament. 7 mens teams and 5 ladies teams battled it out on Sunday 6th September and the standard of play on display was very impressive.
In the Ladies league, UWIC Archers comfortably eased past the new-look Aztec Storm, but when the teams met again in the Women's Final, it was a much closer-run affair, with the visiting Welsh ladies taking the trophy by the narrow margin of 3 points.
An impressive looking Westside team warmed up for their new league season by beating Kingston Wildcats in the men's final. The Aztec Jaguars lost to Westside in the semi final. Pictures of the winners can be seen on our basketball tournaments page.
Our thanks go to our referees for keeping good order on the courts, and to tournament organisers Rich Savage and Lisa Austin, who worked like trojans to make this all come together on the day.

BASKETBALL RULE CHANGES
England Basketball introduced a batch of new rules last season, and because many players still have only a hazy understanding of them, we have kept this brief explanation in place until there is another batch of changes.
These include tinkering with the definition of "Front Court" and "Back Court" status as the dribbler crosses the half-way line, and more serious consequences if a player jumps and reaches upwards through the ring to divert a pass (yes, honestly! they really did spend time on this highly likely eventuality!)
T-shirts can no longer be worn underneath vests, and the most realistic and important change for local basketball is the stricter rule relating to a player being fouled on the fast break. Rather like soccer's "last defender" rule, if the last defender fouls a fast breaker from the side or from behind, it will be called as an "unsportsmanlike" foul. This will of course put the attacker on the line, AND the offender clocks up an "unsportsmanlike", the 2nd of which puts him/her out of the game.
There is also a stricter view on players using their elbows, even if there is no contact. You can see the full list by clicking on basketball rule changes 2008-9, and - as ever - all coaches and players need to know these new rules. Ignorance is no excuse, and it is important that our referees don't get unjustified flack from us players and coaches because we don't understand why they are making unfamiliar calls! |
AZTEC RAGE TAKE 2008-9 LADIES DIVISION ONE TITLE and LADIES CUP!
Congratulations to the ladies of the Aztec Rage, who have won their third Wessex Ladies Division 1 title, and completed the double by winning the Ladies cup at Wessex Finals Day. The Rage pipped Aldworth in a tense finish to the season, in both competitions.

A SPECIAL TALLENT...
Aztec Ladies' Heini Tallent has recently opened her sports massage business, Body Dynamics Sports Massage, in Spencers Wood, Reading.
She's offering Aztecs members a 10% discount on all sports massage treatments; pre- and post-competition massages and relaxing Swedish massages are also available.
Heini says that sports massage is a great way to maintain health and fitness and it works well in treating injuries such as muscle strains, ligament sprains, back or neck pain and postural problems. It can be used to great effect to recover from a training session or competition, and regular treatments help prevent sports injuries too. It's suitable for just about anyone, whether you're serious about your sport or just experiencing niggling aches and pains from work or exercise.

CLUB T-SHIRT!
Yes, the Club T-shirt is ready - thanks, Claire - and has been designed to complement the latest iteration of our club colours.
Cost is a measly £7, and for that we are grateful to former club member Henry Hunt who has chipped in a decent contribution for the privilege of having his new business name on the shoulder.
Speak to Fred Grayson to reserve yours, and ask for L, XL, XXL. |

News of a retired Club Member...
Clubmate Henry Hunt had to retire from the basketball court following an injury. Henry has now started up in the gents' hairdressing business, and has recruited a couple of good european hairdressers ("I don't wield the scissors" Henry pointed out hastily, "I leave that to my professionals!") Henry's philosophy is to ensure that the customer receives an unhurried and professional haircut, rather than a rush in and out of the chair. (Your Style and Image Correspondent can confirm that this is indeed the case, as he "mystery shopped" the service prior to Henry being aware of his booking.)
Henry has bought and completely refurbed the hairdressers at Bay Road Shops in Bullbrook, Bracknell. This is now a very smart unit with completely new equipment, and a bright outlook through the enlarged windows.
To help spread the word about his new venture, Henry is offering discounted haircuts to Club Members - standard cuts reduced from £10.50 to £9, and single grade cuts from £8 to £7. So, when that appointment with the hairdresser is beckoning, why not give Henry's a try?
