AZTEC JAGUARS TO PLAY FOR A SECOND CONSECUTIVE DOUBLE

In an exciting and hard-fought climax to the League season, the Jaguars travelled to Woking for the title decider against Woking Blackhawk Flyers. The Jags started slowly against a big and well drilled Woking team, and quickly slipped 8 points behind. Both teams produced basketball of sustained quality and athleticism, and the gap was down to one point by half time.

The third quarter proved decisive, as quickfire offence and tough defence saw the Jags open up a 15 point gap, and although Woking whittled that down during the 4th quarter, they never had quite enough in the tank to deny Aztecs their 2nd successive Div 1 title. Congratulations to the Jags on this fine achievement, and to Coach Alan McClafferty and Captain Alex Taylor.

Following this, the Jaguars booked their place in the Karl Taylor Shield Final with a walkover over Camberley Eagles, who forfeited the fixture after they failed to raise a team. They face South Bucks Comets in a repeat of last season's final.

COBRAS AND RAGE COULD MAKE IT A CLUB 'TRIPLE DOUBLE'!

Congratulations to Coach Chris Giles and his Cobras, who followed winning the Wessex Division 3 title, by booking their first appearance at the Wessex Finals Day.

In a tight finish at the top of the 3rd Division, The Cobras clinched the title with a decisive 79-65 victory over their rivals, Whitley Wizzards, whilst in the Karl Taylor Plate the team routed Division 2 side Camberley Old Pros 80-24 in the semi-finals.

Congratulations also to Coach Graham Kirkpatrick and his Rage, who have won their second Wessex Ladies Division 1 title, and reached their third consecutive Wessex Finals Day. The Rage pipped Chiltern Ladies in a tense finish to the season, with a narrow victory over their rivals in their title deciding final fixture. They meet Swindon Sonics Ladies in the Wessex Plate Final at the May 18th showpiece.

CLUB LEADERSHIP CHANGES

At the Club's AGM, veteran Chairman Fred Grayson stood down to take what he claims is a well-earned break after 42 consecutive years in the game. "I always hoped to be a great basketball player" says Fred "but in practice the nearest I got was to lead a great basketball Club".

Fortunately for Club Members he is hardly likely to be missed, as the new management structure sees the dream team of Andy Crombie and Nynke Goodman elected as joint Chairmen, or "Chairpersons" in modern parlance. Jonny Skinner takes on the role of Club Registrations and Handbook Secretary. Fortunately the Club retains the services of Veteran Tony Critchley as Kit and Equipment Secretary, and Super-Veteran Jeff Skinner in the Finance chair.

After the meeting, a shootout contest was enjoyed by those attending. Runners up were Laura Stokes and Seb Podziewski, and by the narrowest of margins, our two Shooting Champions are - Nynke Goodman and Andy Crombie.

AZTEC JAGUARS AND AZTEC RAGE PRODUCE HISTORIC CUP DOUBLE...

In an unprecedented success for the club, the Rage and Jaguars both triumphed at Finals Day on 29th April 2007. The Rage overcame a classy Aldworth Arrows team in an exciting and close encounter. The Rage went into the final minute only 2 points ahead, but a crucial drive and extra point from Becky Lear clinched the Ladies Cup for the Aztecs, making up for the disappointment of losing a similarly close final last year. Skipper Jody Matthews was voted MVP and an album of pictures from the game can be seen by following the link below.

The Jags ensured their place in Aztecs folklore by completing a very satisfying double. Having already wrapped up the Division One title, they clinched the Karl Taylor Cup in their final outing of the 2007 season. The final started slowly, with both teams feeling their way, but the depth of the Aztecs bench eventually told as they pulled clear of South Bucks Comets. NEW CLUB T-SHIRT!

Yes, the new club T-shirt is ready - thanks, Claire - and has been designed to complement the latest iteration of our club colours.

Cost is a measly £7, and for that we are grateful to former club member Henry Hunt who has chipped in a decent contribution for the privilege of having his new business name on the shoulder.

Speak to Fred Grayson to reserve yours, and ask for S, M, L, XL, XXL.

News of a retired Club Member...

Clubmate Henry Hunt had to retire from the basketball court following an injury. Henry has now started up in the gents' hairdressing business, and has recruited a couple of good european hairdressers ("I don't wield the scissors" Henry pointed out hastily, "I leave that to my professionals!") Henry's philosophy is to ensure that the customer receives an unhurried and professional haircut, rather than a rush in and out of the chair. (Your Style and Image Correspondent can confirm that this is indeed the case, as he "mystery shopped" the service prior to Henry being aware of his booking.)

Henry has bought and completely refurbed the hairdressers at Bay Road Shops in Bullbrook, Bracknell. This is now a very smart unit with completely new equipment, and a bright outlook through the enlarged windows.

To help spread the word about his new venture, Henry is offering discounted haircuts to Club Members - standard cuts reduced from £10.50 to £9, and single grade cuts from £8 to £7. So, when that appointment with the hairdresser is beckoning, why not give Henry's a try?

The Club AGM was held at Wellington College on Tues 8th April at Wellington College Sports Centre. Papers and accounts were circulated to Members by email.
